Hungry and Jetlagged in Hong Kong

Mr. Selfish and I spent only 36 hours in Hong Kong, and it was a whirlwind of food and lights. We ate dim sum twice and had peking duck once since Mr. Selfish was seriously craving both.

Of course, we went back to Tim Ho Wan for the baked pork buns. They are Mr. Selfish’s favorite, and we haven’t found any better in SF lately.

To further satiate our dim sum craving, we went to Fu Sing Shark Fin Seafood Restaurant, to which we had never been before. The restaurant is famous for its steamed hairy crab roe soup dumplings.

Admittedly, the soup dumpling was the best steamed ones I’ve ever had. The texture and broth were perfect, and the savoriness from the hairy crab roe was divine. However, they cost 36 Hong Kong dollars each, which is about $4.64 USD!

We also tried the roasted pork and the turnip cakes. Both were quite delicious. The roasted pork was tender, juicy, and perfectly seasoned. The turnip cakes were also well-done and crispy – although they were not as good as the ones from Manor Sea Food Restaurant.

Lastly, we went to Spring Deer Restaurant, which is renowned for its peking duck. Although we were warned that we shouldn’t eat peking duck in Hong Kong, especially after having such good peking duck in Beijing, Mr. Selfish and I defied the caution and chomped down.

The peking duck was pretty good although it was very, very, very fatty. It was still probably better than what we can get state-side but certainly not as good as in Beijing.

In my next post, I’ll go over our afternoon tea experience at the Ritz-Carlton in Hong Kong.
